denim care guide
OVerview
Denim is a wardrobe staple offering timeless style, comfort, and durability. To extend the life of your denim we recommend mindful care, here are our easy tips to help preserve the look and longevity of your denim.
We recommend washing your denim sparingly. Over-washing can diminish the natural character of the fabric, softening the unique fades and creases that develop with wear. As a general guideline, wash them only once they’re visibly soiled or have developed an odor. Between washes, spot clean using a mild detergent and a damp cloth.
General Care Tips
- Always make sure to turn your denim inside out. This simple step protects the outer colour from fading and minimises direct contact with chemicals and detergents. This step is especially important for dark-wash and black jeans that are more prone to colour loss or transfer.
- Make sure that all the closures are closed to maintain their shape and prevent snagging once they’re in the washer.
- Wash your denim with similar colours to prevent dye transfer. This means that dark denim should be washed with other dark items, while light denim should be washed with other light-coloured clothing.
- Use a mild detergent that’s formulated for darker colours that can help prevent fading, as darker coloured denim is prone to losing its depth of colour with regular detergents. Avoid fabric softners as they may leave a residue on denim, which may affect texture and appearance.
- Wash in cold water only, as hot water may increase the chances of shrinkage and colour loss.
- After washing, gently smooth and pull the denim to its original shape.
- Air dry your denim inside out, away from direct sunlight. Do not tumble dry as this may shrink and/or distort your denim.
Avoid Dye Transfer
During the dyeing process, denim is saturated with colour to get the perfect shade. While some of that dye fully sets into the fabric, there is often a little extra dye left on the surface. As you wear your denim, especially before the first few washes, some of that dye can rub off onto lighter fabrics and surfaces. Dye transfer is completely normal, especially when your denim is brand new. Common items at risk for dye transfer are the following but not limited too:
- Light-coloured bags and purses
- White sneakers and shoes
- Light upholstery (like couches and car seats)
- Other clothing or fabric items (especially light or white fabrics)
To prevent dye transfer here are a few tips:
- Wash your denim before the first wear- this will help rinse away any excess dye. When washing your new denim for the first time, especially dark washes, keep them completely separate from your other wash load for the first few washes. This helps prevent colour bleeding or dye transfer to your other clothes.
- For darker denim, it may take a few washes before the dye fully sets, so be extra cautious during the first several wears.
- Use a gentle detergent made for dark fabrics, this helps preserve colour and minimize fading.
- Avoid pairing dark denim with light accessories, especially in the first few wears.
- Be extra careful if your jeans get wet - moisture can speed up dye transfer.
